Bing Places & Bing Local Search Rankings

Bing powers local results for roughly 9% of US desktop searches, but its downstream footprint is twice that size. Data published to a Bing Places profile directly feeds Yahoo Local, DuckDuckGo Maps, and Copilot AI summaries. Businesses ignoring Bing leave clean citations off the default search engines of Windows 11 and Microsoft Edge.

How Bing Ranks Local Businesses

Bing relies heavier on exact-match category fields and website authority than Google does. While Google Map Pack results lean on physical distance, Bing favors older domains with matching page titles and physical street addresses on the target landing page.

A business located 8 miles outside a city center will rank higher on Bing than on Google if its primary landing page carries stronger backlink metrics.

Bing aggregates review data from Facebook, TripAdvisor, and review networks like Yelp directly into its business entity card. A 4.8 rating on Google will not help your Bing snippet if your Yelp profile sits at 3.2 with stale hours.

Optimizing Your Bing Places Entity

Sync your Google Business Profile directly through the Bing Places API to pull baseline NAP data and store hours. Once imported, select up to 10 subcategories inside Bing Places; Google caps your secondary categories at 9.

Fill the free-text description with specific physical landmarks, street intersections, and service ZIP codes. Bing's entity extraction algorithm matches plain text terms in this field directly against localized keyword searches.

Add at least 6 high-resolution interior and exterior photos tagged with your physical address. Microsoft's Computer Vision API parses storefront signage inside photos to verify physical store legitimacy.

Downstream Syndication: DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and Copilot

Yahoo search results no longer maintain their own business directory. Yahoo queries query Bing's index, pulling the title, address, and review stars generated by your Bing Places account.

DuckDuckGo routes its desktop and mobile map queries through Apple Maps for visuals, but extracts review counts and operational data from Bing. Maintaining an active Bing listing fixes your metadata on both platforms simultaneously.

Microsoft Copilot sources local business recommendations directly from Bing's Knowledge Graph. When a user asks Copilot for local trade work, the engine filters for verified Bing Places listings carrying complete phone numbers and business descriptions. Check your overall citation consistency by reviewing our local listing score breakdown.
